Presented here for the first time in a modern edition, the oboe concerto in C Major is particularly well-suited to demonstrate Hertel’s qualifications as a composer in general and especially as a composer of concertos. Regarding both its musical language – which is rich in contrasts and at the same time highly focused – and the imaginative and versatile exchange of solo and orchestral passages the highly virtuosic work unquestionably belongs among the most excellent exponents of the German concerto repertoire of the mid-eighteenth century.
